What Ventolin inhaler is and what it is used for?

Ventolin inhaler contains a medicine called salbutamol. This belongs to a group of medicines called fast-acting bronchodilators.

• Bronchodilators help the airways in your lungs to stay open. This makes it easier for air to get in and out.

• They help to relieve chest tightness, wheezing and cough.

Ventolin Evohaler is used to treat breathing problems in people with asthma and similar conditions. This includes relieving and preventing asthma brought on by exercise or other “triggers”. These are things, which bring on asthma symptoms in some people. Common

triggers include house dust, pollen, cats, dogs and cigarette smoke.

Ventolin Evohaler contains a propellant called HFA 134a. This is less harmful to the environment than older inhalers. Older inhalers may taste differently to Ventolin Evohaler.

This will make no difference to how your medicine works.

Ventolin inhaler is a brand of the familiar blue inhaler used for asthma relief. Ventolin inhalers contain the active ingredient salbutamol. These inhalers relieve the tightness in the chest caused by asthma, such as coughing, wheezing and feeling breathless. It works by relaxing the muscles of the airways into the lungs, which makes it easier to breathe.

One or two puffs will usually relieve chest tightness for up to 6 hours. The onset of action of inhaled salbutamol is almost immediate.

Inhaled salbutamol is an ‘as required’ treatment. Reliever inhalers are used only when symptoms are present. Most patients use their reliever inhaler only occasionally. When asthma is well controlled there is usually little need for reliever inhalers such as salbutamol.

How to use Ventolin Evohaler

Always use this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you. Check with your doctor, nurse or pharmacist if you are not sure.

Adults and adolescents aged 12 years and over

• to relieve asthma – One or two puffs.

• to prevent asthma – Two puffs 10-15 minutes before exercise or exposure to a “trigger”.

• for regular treatment – Two puffs up to 4 times a day.

• the maximum dose is 8 puffs in a 24 hour period.

Children under 12 years of age

• to relieve asthma – One puff. Two puffs if required.

• to prevent asthma – One puff 10-15 minutes before exercise or exposure to a “trigger”.

Two puffs if required.

• for regular treatment – Two puffs up to 4 times a day.

• the maximum dose is 8 puffs in a 24 hour period.

Instructions for use

• To help identify that the inhaler is Ventolin, there is an embossed letter V on the plastic case.

• Ventolin Evohaler produces a fine mist, which you inhale through your mouth into your lungs. Your doctor, nurse or pharmacist should show you how to use your inhaler. If you are not sure ask your doctor, nurse or pharmacist.

• Each Evohaler canister provides 200 puffs.

Ventolin side-effects

The more common salbutamol side effects tend to be dose-related and tend to occur within minutes of inhalation, usually lasting a few minutes or hours. Ventolin side effects are more likely to occur with higher doses or more frequent use of inhalers.

Common side effects (more than 1 in 100 people) include:

Tremor, headache, rapid heartbeat can occur, all of which usually settle within minutes or hours.

Uncommon, rare and very rare side-effects (1 in 100 to 1 in 10,000 people) include:

Allergic reactions including breathing difficulties, low blood pressure and collapse, low potassium, hyperactivity and agitation, palpitations (irregular heartbeat), angina (heart pain), flushing, mouth and throat irritation, muscle cramps.

People who experience increased shortness of breath or wheezing after using a salbutamol inhaler should stop their inhaler and seek immediate medical advice. The same applies to people who experience chest pain after using an inhaler.

Asthma treatment

Asthma treatments vary depending on the frequency and severity of symptoms and what triggers a person’s asthma. Asthma symptoms are often intermittent.

First line treatment is usually a blue reliever type inhaler containing salbutamol, one or two puffs 4 to 6 hourly as required. Inhaled salbutamol provides fast acting temporary relief. If asthma is more severe and remains uncontrolled, inhaled steroids can be added. Steroids may be needed continuously or for courses varying from a day to weeks or even months at a time.
